The Horn Program in Entrepreneurship is pleased to accept self-nominations for the 2016-2017 undergraduate student entrepreneurship awards now through Friday, March 24, 2017.  (Yes, right before spring break!  We didn’t think you’d want this hanging over your head while you are enjoying your week off. You’re welcome.)

All full-time undergraduate UD students are eligible to apply.

Application Instructions

Complete the online application form and submit no later than Friday, March 24 at 11:59 p.m. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Important Notes (seriously, you need to read these):

  • If applying for more than one award, a separate essay is required for each.
  • Be sure to include your full name and the name of the award on each essay. If you fail to do this, your application will not be considered.
  • It is advised that you have your essay(s) written and saved to a pdf for uploading, prior to starting the application. Submitting word documents is risky since formatting isn’t always preserved. Do so at your own risk.
  • You are not permitted to apply for an award/scholarship you’ve previously won.

Award recipients will be notified via email by April 11 and will be honored on two occasions:

  1. Hen Hatch Final Round & Innovation Showcase on Tuesday, April 25
  2. Graduation Celebration & Awards Party on Friday, May 12

Shawn & Sheryl McCall Award for Entrepreneurship

The two McCall Awards for Entrepreneurship are granted to undergraduate students from any UD college, in any major, who show entrepreneurial promise. Each award includes $1500 cash and $1000 in VDC Credit (Venture Development Center Credit, which can be used to pursue of a startup, participate in startup events or travel to meet with advisors and prospective customers. See the full guidelines for use of VDC funds (PDF)). Students who are primary owners in an incorporated business, may elect to receive the entire award payable to their business. Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, VDC credits must be used by May 31, 2017.

To be considered, submit an application with the “Shawn & Sheryl McCall Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing your entrepreneurial aspirations. The applications will be reviewed by faculty member(s) of the Horn Program who will then select the recipient(s).

Brad & Jennifer Bono Award

The Brad and Jennifer Bono Award is granted to an undergraduate student from any UD college, in any major, who demonstrates entrepreneurial leadership and social impact. Recipients may elect to receive the $1500 award in the form of cash or VDC credit(Venture Development Center Credit, which can be used to pursue of a startup, participate in startup events or travel to meet with advisors and prospective customers. See the full guidelines for use of VDC funds (PDF)). Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, VDC credits must be used by May 31, 2017.

To be considered, submit an application with the “Brad & Jennifer Bono Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing your entrepreneurial leadership and social impact. The applications will be reviewed by Horn Program faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient. 

David Freschman Scholarship

The David J. Freschman Scholarship was established in memory of David J. Freschman, University of Delaware alumnus, entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

This scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2017 to one or more full-time undergraduate student(s) who will be enrolled during the 2017-2018 academic year and:

  1. Have demonstrated financial need;
  2. Have demonstrated the potential to become a successful entrepreneur;
  3. Possess some combination of the qualities and personal characteristics that David possessed, valued and encouraged: energy, enthusiasm, determination, sales acumen, financial ability and good judgment;
  4. Are able to demonstrate some level of the above qualities through prior work experience, academic achievement or extracurricular activities.

To be considered, submit an application with the “David Freschman Scholarship” checkbox selected and a brief essay explaining how you possess the qualities, characteristics and experience referenced above.  The applications will be reviewed by Horn Program faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient(s).

Horn Program Award

The Horn Program Award is funded by annual gifts from the faculty who teach ENTR-designated courses. The award is granted to a student from any UD college or degree program who has taken at least one ENTR course and promises to realize a great immediate benefit from the receipt of the $1000 award. The Horn Program Award is granted for the pursuit of a specific educational opportunity related to creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation or leadership, or as a VDC credit (Venture Development Center Credit, which can be used to pursue of a startup, participate in startup events or travel to meet with advisors and prospective customers. Graduating seniors are eligible for the award; however, award funds must be used by May 31, 2017 or towards a UD graduate degree program.  If pursuing a graduate degree program relating to creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation or leadership at UD funds will be deposited into the student’s account in Fall 2017.

To be considered, submit an application with the “Horn Program Award” checkbox selected and a brief essay describing how the immediate availability of funding would be a benefit in the pursuit of a specific business idea or educational opportunity.  The applications will be reviewed by Horn Program faculty member(s) who will then select the recipient.
