The TechDeck Computing Lab

Business UDee

The Lerner TechDeck was developed out of a need to update an aging helpdesk area and reinvigorate the IT support structure of the college. This requires some reconstruction, addition of bright colors, new signage, and an overall renewed focus on creativity. Lerner IT has a great set of student employees providing front line support to faculty, staff, and fellow students. The TechDeck is the result of many of their great ideas. The goal was to provide our students ownership over their workspace. This started when Lerner held a naming contest encouraging students to provide a new name for the aging helpdesk. Over 300 names were submitted from over 150 students. The TechDeck emerged as an easy favorite and became the branding symbol of Lerner IT. The face of the new TechDeck will be located in Purnell 026 and is already in reconstruction. Many of the ideas for the new space are directly from the student staff. Bright colors, new signage, and room reconstruction will transform Purnell 026 to provide an engaging area for faculty, staff and students to get support while maintaining a creative and enjoyable workplace.

The TechDeck is representative of the transformation that is taking place in higher education. It is an initiative spreading beyond a single room. Technology is no longer a supplement to education it is a necessity. Students are learning and working differently while instructors are deploying curriculum in new and unique ways. The TechDeck staff is focused on staying current with emerging trends and technologies through exploration, communication, and implementation. Future TechDeck initiatives include developing engaging and collaborative student spaces. Implementing new technologies throughout the college to match the changing paradigm of teaching and learning. And through it all providing superior support and training to educators and students as they navigate these emerging technologies.

The Lerner College is home to a state-of-the-art financial trading facility, the $1.5 million student-led Blue Hen Investment Club, a student-managed restaurant and hotel, a high-technology development center of a global bank and a start-up experience for students with new business ideas.

Undergraduate scholarships, made possible through the generosity of alumni and friends, enable us to support promising scholars. Here, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and his mother, Leni Markell, join recipients of the William Markell Scholarship (center), which benefits students in Accounting and MIS.

The Institute for Financial Services Analytics is a collaboration between the Lerner College, UD's College of Engineering and JPMorgan Chase, and hosts events for academics and the business community designed to address consumer analytics and industry applications.

All Lerner College departments offer discovery learning experiences and emphasize data-based analytics to enrich the student experience. Here, students at Vita Nova, our award-winning restaurant run through HRIM, joined professional chefs and winemakers in hosting a 2014 Mid-Atlantic Wine and Food Festival event.

Lerner College faculty - like Meryl Gardner, whose research on foods and moods was recently published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology - are thought leaders who command attention from influential business audiences, economists and policy makers.
