The MBA Conditional Admission Program (MBA-CAP) provides acceptance into the MBA program without the need to take the TOEFL exam. You will improve your English while developing other important skills necessary for success in the MBA program.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate CAP-Business Track Program program at the ELI, you begin your MBA coursework.

MBA-CAP is a joint program of the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics and the University’s English Language Institute (ELI).

Applying to MBA-CAP

Complete the online graduate application. Application requirements for the MBA apply to MBA-CAP applicants, except for the TOEFL requirement. Select MBA-CAP as the program to which you are applying. You must also apply to CAP through the ELI. Please note that submission of official GMAT scores are required at the time of application.  Quantitative scores should be in the 50th percentile or above. Academically admissible applicants with low Verbal and Writing scores will be awarded conditional admissions to fulfill our program’s English language requirements through the University’s English Language Institute prior to matriculation.

MBA-CAP Timeline

It is important to give yourself enough time to study at the ELI before you begin MBA classes. When you apply for the MBA program, please select a semester entry term that will allow for study at the ELI first.

The length of time required for enrollment in the ELI prior to beginning MBA coursework depends on your individual English skills when you arrive and on your willingness to work hard to improve your English skills.

The following scale shows the estimated periods of time that students require in the ELI, depending on initial placement:

  • Level I (Absolute Beginner): 12-16 months
  • Level II (High Beginner): 10-14 months
  • Level III (Intermediate): 8-10 months
  • Level IV (High Intermediate): 6-8 months
  • Level V (Advanced): 4-6 months
  • Level VI (High Advanced): 2-4 months

Applying to M.S. Finance-CAP

The M.S. in finance program is participates in the University of Delaware’s Conditional Admission Program through the English Language Institute.

Students who are academically qualified for admission to the M.S. in finance program, but have a TOEFL score (IBT) that is less than 100 (or no TOEFL score at all) or less than 7.5 on the IELTS, can still receive admission to the M.S. in finance program through the English Language Institute’s Conditional Admission Program (CAP).

Through CAP, the M.S. in finance program offers admission to qualified international students with a condition: they must first improve their English language skills by attending the English Language Institute (ELI). Once the students pass the highest level of the Academic English courses at the ELI they begin their regular university coursework – and no TOEFL/IELTS exam is required.

Requirements

  • The student must be academically qualified to be accepted into the university and admitted to the MS Finance Program;
  • Complete both:
    1. An application for the MS Finance program (http://www.udel.edu/gradoffice/apply/) and
    2. The CAP application (http://sites.udel.edu/eli/apply/cap/),
  • Submit a competitive GRE or GMAT score
    1. The MS Finance program accepts both the GRE and GMAT
    2. Based on recent classes, competitive scores for admission for MS Finance CAP program is around the 70th percentile on the quantitative portion of the exam
  • Hold the equivalent of a 4-year U.S. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a competitive GPA. Most recent competitive GPA is 3.45
  • Successfully complete the ELI’s Graduate CAP-Business Track Program with minimum grade requirement of a B+ in each of the skill areas of the required courses.
    1. An average grade of B+ for all of the skill areas is not acceptable.
    2. The student is also required to earn a grade of at least 6.5 on the final essay.
  • Students may not take courses in the MS Finance program prior to fulfilling the CAP requirements.
