University of Delaware - Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics

By Lerner College August 23, 2016

Graduate students in the MBA program at the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics recently joined the Caesar Rodney Rotary Club (CRCC) to pack boxes of food and turkeys for 135 local families this Thanksgiving.

The CRCC purchased the turkeys and worked with Lerner College Graduate and MBA Programs to collect food for the boxes. The Basket Brigade volunteers from Lerner joined Cub Scouts, CRCC members and others to assemble the boxes, which were then delivered by Rotarians.

To support this effort, Lerner Graduate and MBA Programs sponsored a Thanksgiving Food Drive during the week of November 16th, collecting non-perishable food at various drop-off bins situated throughout Lerner Hall, Purnell Hall and One South Main.

Rita Hollingsworth, a CRCC member who works as a corporate recruiter for Lerner Graduate and MBA Programs, accompanied the MBA students who helped with the packing effort.

Hollingsworth noted that among the participants in the effort were Lerner graduate student Olga Arshinova and CRCC member Don Fulton, who connected through Lerner’s Graduate Executive Mentors program. This program pairs business graduate students with executives whose professional background complements the students’ career objectives.

“It is great to see our Graduate Executive Mentor program producing relationships like the one Olga Arshinova has with Don Fulton,” Hollingsworth said.

Fulton is also on the board of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Board and is a partner at George Weiner & Associates. He and Hollingsworth are both members of the CRCC.

Mentor/mentee relationships like these, she continued, “connect our students to initiatives that are enriching for our students and give back to our community.”

According to Graduate and MBA Programs academic program coordinator Amy Becker, who spearheaded the food drive, this was the first year that Lerner MBA program participants took part in the community effort, which also included volunteers from ABC Cares, Padua Academy and Sanford School.

Becker added that this partnership with CRCC won’t just be active once a year.

“We look forward to partnering with CRRC for networking and service opportunities for our MBA students over the course of the year,” Becker said.
