Lerner Welcomes New Faculty: Howland Redding

The University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics strives to “cultivate a diverse faculty pursuing impactful scholarship and enthusiastically sharing their expertise” as part of the College’s mission. Each year, our faculty push the boundaries within academia, creating innovative research and earning impressive awards, placements and accolades.

This year, the UD Alfred Lerner College welcomed 18 new faculty members into its community. Howland Redding is an assistant professor of finance, and he spoke with Lerner about his passion for the real estate industry and why he chose to return to the University of Delaware.

Lerner: What is your professional and academic background?

Redding: PhD in Business Administration – Oklahoma State University; MS in Finance – University of Delaware; BS in Business Administration – College of Charleston

Lerner: What is your research focus?

Redding: Residential real estate investments and behavioral finance.

Lerner: What inspired you to work in your field/research/subject area?

Redding: I like investing in tangible assets as well as investing locally. The real estate industry was the perfect fit for me. It has provided me with a great career and I am excited to conduct future practitioner research.

Lerner: What is it about UD that made you want to work/teach/research here?

Redding: Almost a decade ago I enrolled in the MSF program at UD where multiple professors inspired me to want to learn and subsequently want to teach. UD is such a beautiful campus with terrific students. I am honored to have the opportunity to return to UD as a faculty member.

Lerner: What course are you most excited to teach at Lerner?

Redding: Any course Dr. Laura Field asks me to teach (especially capital markets, investments, and real estate finance).

Lerner: What is something unique about you that may surprise your peers/students? (hobby, talent, experience etc.)

Redding: Hobbies – Eagles season ticket holder since 2008, collector of antique nautical maps; Experiences – Went on an African safari with my grandfather in 1996, touring Kenya and Tanzania; Was president of Newark National Little League in 2013 when they went to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
