Kamalpreet Kaur Keer, from Punjab, India is graduating from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics with a master’s of science in accounting analytics

Keer was nominated for this series by Academic Program Coordinator Sarah Dix, who said, “Kamalpreet has worked as a TA for our department, is fending off multiple job offers and offers of sponsorship, and is a truly dedicated Blue Hen.”

In this profile, Keer shared her favorite UD memories, how she has changed during her time at UD and her plans following graduation.

Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?

Keer: Since my first semester at UD, I have grown significantly both academically and personally. Initially, I was focused primarily on coursework and adjusting to a new academic environment. Over time, I have developed strong analytical skills through courses like financial analysis using big data and my current internship, where I assist in financial projections and business modeling. I have also become more confident in my leadership abilities, taking on roles like an iBuddy mentor and participating actively in class discussions and group projects. These experiences have enhanced my communication skills and deepened my understanding of how to apply accounting principles in real-world contexts. Overall, I’ve become more adaptable, proactive, and driven to excel in both academic and professional settings.

Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?

Keer: Adjusting to life at UD without the comfort of family was a challenging transition. I often felt isolated, but joining the Chemistry of Baking club became a turning point. It wasn’t just about experimenting with recipes, it was about forming connections and finding a sense of belonging. The friendships I made there helped me feel more at home and reminded me that support can come from unexpected places. Academically, balancing my coursework with a demanding internship and a teaching assistant role for Professor Gregory Kane was another significant challenge. Juggling multiple responsibilities required me to become more organized and disciplined with my time. Attending leadership seminars provided practical strategies for managing stress and staying focused under pressure. These experiences not only strengthened my time management skills but also taught me the importance of seeking out resources and building connections to stay grounded during demanding periods.

Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?

Keer: I am incredibly grateful to have been recognized for my commitment to leadership and academic success with “The MS in Accounting Academic Excellence Award.” In addition to that, one of my favorite UD experiences was working at the UDairy Creamery from summer through winter semester. It was a rewarding opportunity, not only did I serve and scoop ice cream, but I also got to make some of the flavors myself. Working there, I fell in love with ice cream all over again and even had the fun privilege of tasting every single flavor, making the experience truly special. Another favorite was participating in “I <3 UD Day” for two years. I loved the lively atmosphere, playing games, making new friends, and collecting UD merchandise. A highlight was winning an Amazon Alexa during the Quizzo competition, which added extra excitement. These moments stand out as some of my most memorable experiences, helping me connect deeply with the UD community beyond academics.

Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?

Keer: During my time at UD, I’ve been fortunate to learn from many incredible professors and staff who have truly shaped my experience. Sarah Dix stood out for always being approachable and ready to offer support whenever I needed guidance, which made a huge difference during my journey. Taking Dr. Michal Jung’s “Financial Analysis Using Big Data” course was eye-opening; his teaching helped me discover the fascinating world where finance meets analytics, and I gained skills that I’m excited to build on. I’m especially thankful to Professor Gregory Kane, under whom I had the privilege to work as a teaching assistant for two semesters. His mentorship went beyond academics, helping me grow professionally and personally while deepening my passion for accounting. I also want to recognize Dr. Uma Velury, Dr. Asli Bosoglu, Dr. Adam Fleischhacker, and Dr. Howland Redding, whose engaging classes and innovative teaching styles made learning analytics and finance truly enjoyable and inspiring. Their support and expertise motivated me to embrace challenges and keep pushing my limits.

Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?

Keer: To me, being a “Lifelong Lerner” means making the lessons, values, and experiences from Lerner an enduring part of my identity. It’s a deep, ongoing commitment to growth, curiosity, and resilience that goes beyond the classroom and lasts a lifetime. The encouragement and wisdom I’ve received from UD’s professors, staff, and alumni have profoundly shaped my path, and I feel inspired to pay that forward by supporting and mentoring future students. Being a Lifelong Lerner is about carrying a permanent bond with this community, continuously seeking to learn and grow, and using that knowledge to make a meaningful difference wherever life leads me.

Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?

Keer: My biggest advice to incoming freshmen is to step outside your comfort zone and say yes to new experiences. Join clubs that interest you, attend campus events, and connect with professors, you never know where those connections might lead. Take advantage of the resources available, from career services to leadership seminars, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Also, make time for things you love, whether it’s a hobby or a part-time job that brings you joy. College is about more than academics; it’s about discovering who you are, building lasting relationships, and making memories that will stay with you long after graduation.

Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?

Keer: After graduation, my immediate goal is to complete my CPA certification, further strengthening my foundation in accounting and auditing. I’m also thrilled to be starting a new role in the world’s largest economy, where I’ll have the chance to apply what I’ve learned and gain hands-on experience in the accounting and auditing field. It’s an exciting step forward, and I’m eager to take on new challenges, refine my skills, and grow professionally. Beyond that, I’m committed to staying connected with the UD community, giving back to the network that has been such a pivotal part of my journey.
