A native of Lagos, Nigeria, Tobi Adanri is graduating from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics with an MBA in business analytics.

Adanri was nominated for this series by Academic Program Manager Andrea Hartman who commented on his high academic performance, saying, “Tobi has a 3.971 GPA.”

In this profile, Adanri shares his favorite UD memories, how he has changed during his time at UD and his plans following graduation.

Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?

Adanri: When I arrived at UD last semester from Nigeria, I faced an entirely new academic environment and set of expectations. The structured coursework challenged me to sharpen my analytical thinking, breaking down complex problems into clear, data‐driven solutions and taught me to adapt my study habits on the fly. Through group projects and student leadership roles, I’ve grown more confident guiding teams and communicating ideas effectively. Overall, UD has transformed me into a more resilient, strategic thinker and collaborative leader.

Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?

Adanri: One of my earliest challenges at UD was adapting to the cold winter after coming from Nigeria. I never imagined how much I’d have to bundle up just to get to class! On the academic side, I struggled with coding assignments and the competitive internship search. Thanks to UD’s career services, I learned to craft a strong resume and practiced interviewing skills. In my coursework, supportive professors and TAs guided me through complex projects, breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps. Today, I’m not only comfortable with coding and technical tasks but also confident in presenting myself professionally to potential employers.

Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?

Adanri: My favorite UD tradition has been the MBA “First Fridays” networking events. Bringing together full-time and online students, these meetups foster lively conversations with peers and industry professionals, giving me real-world insights into today’s job market and best practices. Equally memorable was participating in the UD case competition; working through a complex business problem under time pressure sharpened my teamwork and problem-solving skills, and let me apply classroom theory to a practical challenge.

Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?

Adanri: Professor Stocker made a huge difference for me. As my finance instructor, he not only delivered clear, engaging lectures but also took a personal interest in my career goals. He connected me with industry contacts, provided strong referrals, and even put in a good word on my behalf with potential employers. Having an expert in the field championing your abilities is invaluable, and his support gave me the confidence and connections to pursue internship and job opportunities successfully.

Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?

Adanri: Being a Lifelong Lerner means belonging to a supportive network where professors and staff are eager to help you succeed both inside and outside the classroom. I’m confident that anytime I need guidance, I can tap into the Lerner community for support.

Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?

Adanri: As you begin your UD journey, embrace every challenge and opportunity with a disciplined mindset, establish reliable study habits, but don’t stop there. Immerse yourself in campus life by joining clubs, attending events, and seeking out mentors among faculty and alumni. Let curiosity guide you: ask questions in class, take on projects beyond your comfort zone, and use each new experience to sharpen your skills. By actively engaging and remaining open to unexpected opportunities, you’ll build the confidence and connections that set leaders apart.

Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?

Adanri: Following graduation, I will begin my new role as a project manager at a real estate firm, where I can apply my leadership and analytical skills. At the same time, I plan to pursue a cybersecurity certification to broaden my technical expertise. I’m also looking forward to spending more quality time with my family to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
