MAEEE Alumni Highlights: Austin Green

Austin Green, MAEEE class of 2021, is an accomplished economics instructor who has earned significant recognition in the field. He currently serves as an instructor of economics at Perimeter College at Georgia State University. He was named Georgia Economics Teacher of the Year in 2023 and has been featured on several major platforms, including Marketplace, while publishing in journals such as the Journal of Economics Teaching and Journal for Economic Educators. He shared the opportunities that MAEEE has provided him with and how it shaped his career.

What exciting news or accomplishments have you been a part of?
I’ve published in the Journal of Economics Teaching and Journal for Economic Educators. I’ve been on two podcasts and interviewed by Marketplace during National Economic Education Month. In 2023, I was honored as Georgia Economics Teacher of the Year.

What did you learn through your MAEEE experience that you wouldn’t have learned anywhere else?
I learned how to improve my economics teaching by focusing on both content and pedagogy. The MAEEE program’s integrated approach is unique and unlike any other.

Describe an important connection you have made through your graduate program.
My 2021 cohort has become a vital network for me. I have a group of people I can reach out to for help on nearly any question, whether it’s economics-related or even math-related. The program also connected me with the Foundation for Teaching Economics, leading to new professional opportunities.

What other opportunities have the MAEEE degree provided you?
The MAEEE degree helped me secure my position at Perimeter College at Georgia State and has opened doors for me to mentor teachers through the Foundation for Teaching Economics.

The MAEEE graduate program helped me become…
. . . a better multiplier of economics education.

What piece(s) of advice would you give to current MAEEE students or prospective applicants?
The doors will open for you, but you’ll need to get through some tough concepts first (i.e., indifference curves). But you can do it!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I can’t emphasize enough how much the MAEEE program has shaped my career. I recently spoke to student teachers at Kennesaw State University and mentioned that there are only two places where I’ll present without compensation: Kennesaw State and the University of Delaware. These institutions gave me so much academically and professionally, and I’m indebted to both.
