What Can You Do With a Financial Planning & Wealth Management Degree?

With more and more employees becoming responsible for managing their own money before and after retirement, there is a growing population in need of financial planners to help them make important financial decisions. What is financial planning and wealth management?

Financial planning and wealth management is the process of identifying short-term and long-term financial goals of clients, examining the finances available and creating a balanced, strategic plan in order to achieve the goals in focus. In addition to looking at the needs of clients and creating a plan, financial planners and wealth managers aim to grow the finances of those they work with.

What is a CFP?

A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) is someone who holds professional certification and is formally recognized to be an individual who holds expertise in the topics of financial planning, taxes, insurance, estate planning and retirement. To become certified, one must take the CFP, but prior to that is required to complete a series of educational requirements.

The CFP board has accredited the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics’ financial planning and wealth management program which means that graduates of the program will have satisfied the educational requirements, becoming both eligible and prepared, to sit for the CFP exam immediately after graduation.

After graduating in 2020, 90% of Lerner’s financial planning and wealth management graduates were employed and earning a median starting salary of $60,000 or pursuing further education.
