Fardin Sabahat Khan, a graduate student from Middletown, Delaware, was recently awarded best paper at the 5th African Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Conference, in Pretoria, South Africa. Khan is pursuing an M.S. in business analytics and information management at UD and is expected to graduate in May of 2025. Khan shared his experiences and insights on improving the world of business for future generations of Blue Hens.

Lerner: Why did you go back to pursue your graduate degree? Why did you choose Lerner College for your studies?

Khan: After completing my undergraduate degree, I worked for five years in the electric vehicle (EV) and software industries. I decided to go back to school because I felt the need to advance my career further and deepen my understanding of business analytics. I chose Lerner College for my graduate studies mainly because of its holistic approach and industry-oriented curriculum. The emphasis on research and innovation, along with excellent facilities, made Lerner the ideal choice for my academic and professional growth.

Lerner: What did you learn through this opportunity that you wouldn’t have learned anywhere else?

Khan: Through this opportunity, I learned about compassion, comradeship, and a new horizon of life in a way that wouldn’t have been possible elsewhere. Studying alongside a diverse group of students and teachers from various backgrounds provided me with unique perspectives and enriched my understanding of different cultures and viewpoints. This environment fostered a deep sense of empathy and teamwork, highlighting the importance of valuing different ideas and experiences, which is essential for personal and professional growth.

Lerner: Please share an example of a course or concept that you were able to apply directly to your life and/or career.

Khan: There are many valuable lessons I’ve learned during my first semester at UD that I plan to apply directly to my life and career. All the courses I’ve taken are poised to have a significant impact on my professional development. If I were to highlight a particular concept, it would be the importance of teamwork and open-mindedness. These skills are crucial for success in any field, enhancing my ability to collaborate effectively and approach challenges with flexibility.

Lerner: Describe an important connection you have made through your graduate program (personal, professional, peers, mentors, professors, etc.)

Khan: I have come across some wonderful people during my first semester here at UD. I would like to mention Professor Andrea Everard, Professor Asli Basoglu, and BAIM Program Coordinator Sarah Dix.

Lerner: If you were to describe your classmates in one word, what would that be and why?

Khan: If I were to describe my classmates in one word, it would be “driven.” This term captures their relentless pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement, both academically and professionally.

Lerner: How do you balance your career with your studies?

Khan: Balancing a career with studies requires careful planning and effective time management. Though I am not doing anything at this moment apart from my studies, I prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance, dedicating specific times for work and study to ensure both receive adequate attention. Additionally, staying organized and setting realistic goals helps me maintain focus and reduce stress, ensuring I perform well in both fields.

Lerner: Fill in this sentence: “My graduate program helped me become…”

Khan: My graduate program helped me become more analytical and strategic in my approach to problem-solving within the business and technology sectors.

Lerner: What was the most impactful hands-on project or case competition that you were able to participate in?

Khan: Carol A. Ammon Case Competition

Lerner: What are your plans or next steps for the future?

Khan: My next steps involve completing my Master’s in Business Analytics with a strong academic record while continuing to gain practical experience in the field. Post-graduation, I plan to leverage my enhanced analytical skills and business acumen to move into a more strategic role, possibly in data-driven decision-making or consulting. I am also considering the possibility of pursuing further certifications in data science and machine learning to stay competitive and relevant in the rapidly evolving tech industry. Additionally, I aim to expand my professional network by connecting with industry leaders and participating in relevant conferences and workshops, which will open up more career opportunities and pathways for professional growth.
