A native of Newark, Delaware, Lynn Roberts graduated from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics as a management information systems major with a minor in entrepreneurship.

Roberts was nominated for this series by Manager of Marketing and Events At Horn Entrepreneurship Meg Marcozzi.

In this profile, Roberts shares her favorite UD memories, how she has changed during her time at UD and her plans following graduation.

Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?

Roberts: Reflecting on my journey from the first semester to the present, the most significant transformation I’ve undergone is undoubtedly a newfound sense of self-assurance and clarity regarding my personal growth trajectory. You will realize that everyone starts to branch off into their own stage of life. It’s crucial to recognize that everyone progresses at their own pace, and comparison serves only to hinder personal development. Instead, prioritizing self-awareness and making decisions for yourself is crucial. By centering on individual needs and ambitions, one can unlock unparalleled potential for growth and fulfillment.

Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?

Roberts: Navigating the delicate balance between year-round internships and full-time student commitments has been both challenging and rewarding. Despite the demanding schedule, these experiences have provided invaluable insights into potential career paths, prompting a deeper exploration of my future aspirations. While trying to figure out the best degree for me that aligns with my long-term goals, each internship opportunity offered a glimpse into various industries, guiding me towards a more informed decision-making process.

Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?

Roberts: Studying abroad in Sydney, Australia was unequivocally the highlight of my undergraduate journey. It arrived precisely when I needed it most, offering me a transformative perspective on the world. Immersed in a culture vastly different from my own, I returned home not only with a deep appreciation for getting out of my comfort zone  but also with an appetite to explore and understand more cultures.

Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience? If so, who and how?

Roberts: Vince DiFelice profoundly shaped my entire university experience at UD. His unwavering dedication to his students radiates through every interaction. It’s evident that he meticulously structures his classes to maximize student learning and growth. Under his guidance, I felt empowered to embrace my true potential, particularly through his entrepreneurship courses. Prior to enrolling, I found myself conforming to what I believed others expected of me. However, diving into entrepreneurship was a pivotal moment—a leap of faith that allowed me to pursue my own aspirations and carve my unique path.

Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?

Roberts: Embracing the ethos of Lifelong Learning signifies a perpetual hunger for knowledge, a relentless pursuit that knows no bounds. It’s about refusing to settle for the status quo and being unafraid to confront change and diversity head-on. The fervor intertwined with learning ought to be transformative, nurturing growth both personally and professionally.

Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?

Roberts: Professionally, I strongly believe that immersing myself in the vibrant community of Horn Entrepreneurship will serve as a catalyst for inspiring and fostering personal growth. On a personal note, I’ve learned the value of embracing novelty and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. While the allure of campus activities can sometimes breed a fear of missing out, it’s crucial to prioritize genuine enjoyment over fleeting trends. And amidst the whirlwind pace of college life, taking moments to bask in the warmth of the sun can be incredibly rejuvenating. Remember, when people reveal their true selves, believe them; authenticity is a cornerstone of meaningful connections. Don’t hesitate to engage with your professors—they can offer invaluable guidance and support, paving the way for future opportunities and recommendations. Lastly, dare to take risks—whether it’s revamping your decor, exploring a new fashion style, or venturing into uncharted career territories. You never know what discoveries await or passions may ignite along the way.

Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?

Roberts: Upon graduation, I eagerly anticipate the continuation of my journey as a Program Manager for the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation on a full-time basis. Leveraging my technical expertise, I am committed to spearheading the development and expansion of the nonprofit’s technology and data infrastructure. Moreover, I am dedicated to facilitating access to essential resources for aspiring entrepreneurs, empowering them to thrive in their ventures. Immersed in such a vibrant community of entrepreneurs, I envision honing my skills and insights, laying the groundwork for my own entrepreneurial endeavors in the future.
