As a member of the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics’ Class of 2020, Jasnoor Hundal from Bear, Delaware has not had the typical final semester or commencement at UD due to the coronavirus outbreak. She, and her entire class, have shown incredible resilience, maturity and spirit while adjusting to the many unexpected changes that they have encountered.
In this profile, Hundal, an accounting and finance double major, shared her favorite UD memories, how she has changed during her time at UD and her plans following graduation.
Hundal was nominated for this series by UD instructor of accounting Debra Dragone, who said, “I have enjoyed knowing Jasnoor (Jas) in many roles: as a student; a tutor; a proctor; a TA and a friend. Jasnoor has an excellent academic record, which prompted an invite as a peer tutor in our Accounting 207 and 208 program. Always reliable, competent and self-assured, she is among our most highly regarded tutors—which says a lot since all our tutors are excellent in their field. She has tutored for over two years with us. She was one of the first to volunteer and commit to online tutoring last year before it became a requirement this semester.
“Jasnoor is also a reliable proctor,” Dragone continued. “While prioritizing her workload, she will help the department in maintaining integrity and competently answering questions during exams. She has been a teaching assistant for Accounting 208 since last year. This spring, she jumped in to help another instructor by supporting the technology needed to teach his course. She is in the Honors Program and is graduating with honors. She has been a member of AkPsi, one of our business fraternities, for the past three years and is currently VP of Membership.”
She is a Lerner executive mentee and is also a member of the UDance Comma Club. With all the campus participation, Jas finds time for outside activities. She has worked with a small business, Cecile Boutique, since helping with it’s start up. In fact, she started an off-shoot called Harmony Rain that is tailored to College Women’s apparel. She opened a “pop-up” shop on campus designed for formals. This was very popular until the outbreak of the virus caused the shop to close. Jas has a job upon graduation. She’ll be employed with EY with a start date tentatively set for July,” Dragone concluded. “Jas is a Blue Hen that makes us proud.“
Q: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?
Hundal: I came into freshman year nervous but excited for what the next four years would hold. I’m thankful for the experiences and opportunities UD provided me with to help me grow professionally and personally. I’ve found my passions, a future career, a group of people who push me to be my best and a home away from home. Four years later, I am proud of the confident and self-assured woman I have become and excited for what the future holds.
Q: What is your favorite place at UD?
Hundal: My favorite place at UD is the Trading Lab in Purnell Hall. I walked by it every single day and always found a familiar face. From late night cramming to gossiping in the back room, to getting gyro cart food every chance we got and crying about our accounting classes, I spent more time in the trading lab than I did my own apartment junior and senior year.
Q: What is the most memorable course that you took at Lerner?
Hundal: The most memorable course I took at Lerner would be Audit with Professor Vermeer. The course material is dense, but he constantly went out of his way to help students grasp the material to the best of their abilities. I took this class with some of my best friends, and just like with every other accounting course I’ve taken over the last four years, I couldn’t have survived without them.
Q: What was your favorite signature UD experience?
Hundal: My favorite signature UD experience would be the 2019 Winter study abroad trip to Italy. I went with a group of 20 other people and came back a month later with some of my absolute best friends. The experiences and memories we shared shaped my college career. Thank you to Professor Detweiler and Professor Bunnell for being our fill-in mom and dad, encouraging us to spend as much time as possible with each other and giving us the true Italy experience!
Q: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?
Hundal: It means fostering lifelong connections with my peers, current alumni and faculty who have guided me along these last few years. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Professor Gillespie, Professor Dragone and Professor Vermeer. They helped me navigate a double major, graduate successfully with 150 credits, determine what I wanted out of a career in the accounting world and work towards getting my CPA. They’ve offered me the best advice and guidance over these last few years and I hope to contribute back to Lerner over the next few years by staying connected, coming to visit and offering my resources to the students whose shoes I was in just a few years ago.
Q: What are your plans following graduation?
Hundal: I will be working at EY as a part of the Risk Advisory service line. I also plan to go to law school at some point and pursue a career in corporate law.
