2024 UD Lerner College of Business and Economics Honors Day Awardees

The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics celebrated numerous outstanding students on their academic successes during the 2024 Honors and Achievements Day ceremony on May 10, held at the Audion at STAR Campus.

Lerner’s mission is to to facilitate our students’ success and foster intellectually curious and globally-minded lifelong learners with a leadership mindset. This year, we are recognizing more than 170 students for their hard work, generosity, passion, commitment, and leadership, among many other laudable attributes. They have demonstrated dedication through achieving excellence, whether through academic performance, industry achievements, or community service.

College Awards

John F. Puglisi Scholarship

In recognition of a business student who has demonstrated and practiced commitments to the values of education, athletics, and community service. Donald J. Puglisi, a retired professor of finance, established this scholarship as a tribute to his father, John F. Puglisi.

Robert L. Schweitzer Memorial Award

In recognition of a senior from the state of Delaware, who has, in addition to academic excellence, demonstrated involvement in club sports and a commitment to service. The Scholarship is in memory of Robert L. Schweitzer, the former Donald J. Puglisi Professor of Finance, and a long-time supporter of UD athletics.

Leon & Margaret Slocomb Outstanding Student Recognition Award

Established by Mr. and Mrs. Slocomb to recognize students in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics who are judged by the selection committee to be hard-working “average” students, and viewed as very creative, very diligent, and very trustworthy.  Student academic performance is to be a secondary consideration in the selection of the recipient, as the Slocombs’ wish is to recognize students who are not necessarily honors students, but those who exhibit the characteristics noted above.

Established by Ms. Krista Urbaniak in memory of her brother, B. Scot Flewelling, this scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior legacy student based on demonstrated financial need that has demonstrated exemplary problem-solving skills and is hardworking.

Herbert Family Scholarship

Awarded based on financial need and academic merit to undergraduate students who matriculated in the Lerner College of Business and Economics and who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or greater. Special consideration given to underrepresented students with a preference for students of African American or Hispanic descent.

Joyce C. Davis Award

Awarded based on academic merit, to undergraduate students enrolled in the College. Special consideration given to students engaged with the Lerner Diversity Council.

Victor Giardini Award

The Victor Giardini Award was established to perpetuate the memory of Victor Giardini and the ideals and qualities he exemplified, especially the optimistic spirit he shared with his students and colleagues. This monetary award and certificate is presented to the junior or senior management, marketing, operations management, or international business studies student who has demonstrated enthusiasm for learning, encouragement toward their fellow students, and perseverance.

The monetary award and a certificate will be given to a senior business administration major who has consistently demonstrated such engagement by helping to facilitate thoughtful discussion with professors and fellow students, seeking interconnections among course topics, and reflecting deeply on the implications and application of course material.

Annually awarded to two students who demonstrate entrepreneurial promise. This is typically evidenced by engaging in experiential learning activities to promote development of an entrepreneurial mindset, skillset, and means as well as repeated efforts to pursue value creation from new ideas.

Annually awarded to a meritorious student who promises to deploy award funding in the near-term (within the next few months) and realize consequential benefit. For this award, merit is typically evidenced by prolonged engagement in activities that have positioned the student to benefit from the award (e.g., activities resulting in initial new venture traction or selective acceptance into a high impact educational offering).

Annually awarded to a student based on the impact they’ve made or are likely to make in the very near future through their entrepreneurial leadership and who brings people together around a shared vision to make something happen that would not have happened otherwise.

Charles N. Lanier Economics Prize

Recognizes senior economics students with the most outstanding record of academic achievement. The award is named in memory of Charles N. Lanier, a professor and chair in the Department of Economics from 1940 until his retirement in 1973.

Bertram F. Levin Memorial Award

Recognizes a senior economics major who exhibits an unusually high level of intellectual curiosity and creativity in the study of economics. This award, originally established by Professor Levin, who died in July of 2018 at the age of 93, now honors his memory. Professor Levin was a faculty member in the Department of Economics from 1964 until his retirement as a professor emeritus in 1991.
