Accounting & MIS Faculty Honors

Lerner accounting and MIS faculty awarded for great work.

When students look back at their time at the University of Delaware, of course, they remember social events and UD traditions, but they also always remember their favorite professors.

Lerner College’s Accounting and MIS Department recognized three of the best, with Hanieh Javadi Khasraghi, associate professor of MIS, winning the Les Chadwick Teaching Award; Ellen Monk, associate professor of MIS, winning the Markell Service Award; (both awards are named after beloved professors in our department) and George Tsakumis, associate professor of accounting, winning the departmental research award. In what has now become department tradition, they each enjoyed a slice of cake with their photos!

Hanieh teaches Business Information Systems (MISY261) and Data and Analytics (MISY408). Hanieh’s students say it best, remarking that, “MISY408 was incredibly useful for my career in tech consulting… I learned a lot about machine learning and AI.” In addition to teaching relevant material, her students say, “Hanieh is one of my favorite professors ever, as she clearly wants her students to succeed and does everything in her power to help them. She is incredibly kind and is one of the most communicative professors I have ever worked with.” The tradition of teaching excellence is alive and well in the Department of Accounting and MIS.

In one of George’s recent research papers, he looked at the role that work experience plays in interpreting financial standards, particularly those that require the most professional judgment and ethical reasoning. He demonstrated that experienced accountants are more likely to apply the intent of principles-based standards and also more likely to make conservative reporting choices than less experienced accountants.
