Blue Hen Investment Club

Students at the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics have a diverse range of nearly 30 student-led groups on campus, offering students opportunities to connect, engage and grow in their personal and professional interests.

Peter Buckle, Class of 2026 finance and accounting double major, is the president of the Blue Hen Investment Club. Buckle shared why he joined the organization and his proudest moment from being in the club.

Lerner: When and why did you choose to join this student group?

Buckle: I joined fall 2022 my freshman year. I chose to try to join the investment club as I wanted to continue learning and developing my financial knowledge. The club provides a hands-on opportunity to be involved in the equity stock market, and gain advice and mentorship from like-minded people.

Lerner: When and where does your student group meet and approximately how many members do you have?

Buckle: BHIC meets in the Geltzeiler Trading Lab on the first floor of Purnell. The weekly Thursday club meetings take place from 5:30 pm ~6:30/7 pm. The club currently has approximately 60 members.

Lerner: What is the mission/goal of your student group?

Buckle: The mission of the club is to invest in undervalued stocks and outperform the S&P 500, the club’s benchmark. Furthermore, the club aims to prepare individuals for job applications through mentorship and hands-on experience comparable with that of first world economies.

Lerner: What is your best memory or proudest moment from this student group?

Buckle: My proudest moment in this group is being mentioned as a mentor within the group. Having the chance to help those around me, and passing the so-called “torch” down is an extremely rewarding feeling.

Lerner: What is unique about your student group?

Buckle: We manage ~$5 million AUM of the University of Delaware’s Endowment Fund and invest in equity stocks.

Lerner: What are your goals for the future of your student group?

Buckle: The future goals of the club are to better promote the Charitable Grants Committee within the club, and better assist RSOs and nonprofits in raising funds. Furthermore, to promote that the resources in the club, such as New Analyst Education, are available to everyone on campus. The mentality I aim to foster is that we are people supporting and uplifting those around us, both in and out of the club. This support can be in the form of funds provided through a charitable grant, or taking the time to help someone develop an understanding of a topic in preparation for an interview. One person’s success is everyone’s success.

Lerner: How has your student group helped you grow, personally or professionally?

Buckle: BHIC has helped provide a comprehensive alumni database connecting me to professionals established in their fields. Furthermore, it has taught me to improve my public speaking and to act with conviction.

Lerner: Does your group have any social media handles?

Buckle: @blueheninvestmentclub on Instagram

Lerner: Does your group have a website?

Buckle: https://sites.google.com/udel.edu/blue-hen-investment-club/home
