A native of Hockessin, Del., Matthew Dellose graduated from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics as a finance major with a minor in management information systems.
Dellose was nominated for this series by Visiting Instructor Todd Whitlow. In this profile, Dellose shares his favorite UD memories, challenges he has overcome and his plans following graduation.
Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?
Dellose: I’ve become more disciplined, driven, confident and caring for myself and others.
Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?
Dellose: I dealt with the challenge of time management, where I created a more structured, routine-like lifestyle to care for myself more and organize my life a lot better. I’ve also dealt with learning issues in certain classes which taught me to put more effort into my work and to stay in contact with teachers as much as I can.
Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?
Dellose: I’d say studying abroad because I learned so much about myself that I never knew beforehand. I learned that I’m more independent and confident than what I thought. I also learned to live on my own and take care of myself better. Ultimately, I learned to make valuable connections with people I never met and to step out of my comfort zone in order to grow.
Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?
Dellose: Yes, I’d say Todd Whitlow because he taught me how to become a better student and professional. Also, he went out of his way to invite me to lunch and to talk about life and study abroad. This showed me how much he cared for my success as a person and how it’s important to make valuable connections with people.
Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?
Dellose: To me, this means living life to the fullest in all aspects. Whether it’s school, work or personal life, being a Lifelong Lerner means to be a confident person and professional who commits to something all the way.
Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming students to make the most out of their college experience?
Dellose: Participate in more activities or events that seem uncomfortable at first. I guarantee you’ll learn more about yourself than you’ll ever know. Also, always control your attitude and effort in a positive way.
Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?
Dellose: I’m moving to Charlotte, N.C. to work as a sales associate for Equitable.
