Outstanding Lifelong Lerner: Bob Miller

Outstanding Lifelong Lerner Bob Miller

Bob Miller graduated from Lerner College in 1965 with a bachelor of science in accounting, and later received his MBA in 1971. Miller currently resides in Wilmington, DE.

As an Outstanding Lifelong Lerner, Miller discussed his own professional experiences over the years and the mentorship he received from Lerner professors. Miller has also always had a lifelong love for music, and is a self taught musician and guitarist.

Lerner: Why did you decide to pursue your program at the Lerner College?

Miller: In my freshman year, I was an “undeclared” student in the School of Arts & Sciences. But then I thought I might possibly want to join the FBI or the U.S.Treasury Department (after graduation) and I decided that an accounting degree was my objective. I started taking BU-208 and other business classes at Robinson Hall.

Lerner: What did you learn through this opportunity that you wouldn’t have learned anywhere else?

Miller: I could have theoretically worked toward an accounting degree elsewhere, but Delaware was where I wanted to be.

Lerner: Please share an example of a course or concept that you were able to apply directly to your life and/or career.

Miller: Courses in accounting, finance and economics prepared me quite well for my future work locations.

Lerner: Describe an important connection you have made through your program (personal, professional, peers, mentors, professors, etc.)

Miller: Outstanding instructors abounded at UD – particularly, Dr. William Markell and Dr. Gordon Bonner.

Lerner: If you were to describe your classmates in one word, what would that be and why?

Miller: Dedicated.

Lerner: Fill in this sentence: “My program helped me become…”

Miller: A problem-solver in financial matters.

Lerner: What piece(s) of advice would you give to current UD students?

Miller: Work hard – a good college education will prepare you for your future – skip the partying (or at least most of it) !

Lerner: What are your professional plans or next steps for the future?

Miller: I am retired, but I do volunteer work – serve as treasurer for my community, have been a Stephen Minister at my church, active in a social group for senior citizens, still perform as a musician and vocalist.

Lerner: What piece(s) of advice do you have for fellow businesspeople?

Miller: ALWAYS be honest in your dealings.

Lerner: What does it mean to you to be a Lifelong Lerner?

Miller: As people age, we need to exercise both our bodies AND our brains. (“Use it or lose it”)
