Lifelong Lerner: Natalie Hook

A native of Fairport, N.Y., Natalie Hook is graduating from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics with a major in business analytics concentrated in finance.

Hook was nominated for this series by Assistant Professor of MIS, Advisor – MIS Undergrad Edward Hartono, who described her as an “outstanding student.”

In this profile, Hook shares her favorite UD memories, how she has changed during her time at UD and her plans following graduation.

Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?

Hook: My freshman year I was still looking for who I truly was. I was shy and had a lack of confidence. Throughout my time here I have been able to meet people who have led me to become the best version of myself and help me with my confidence issue. I am now able to take charge of many things and have become a leader in many roles on campus.

Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?

Hook: A challenge I’ve faced is learning that there is so much competition! I’ve had to learn how to work extra hard for opportunities I would like to pursue. Also, sometimes an opportunity I haven’t gotten has led me to different and even better ones, so I try not to get too discouraged when something doesn’t work out and to try something different.

Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?

Hook: My favorite experience was joining my dance RSO “Impact Dance Company.” It led me to so many friendships and leadership opportunities that taught me so much. It has helped me keep active and been a fun way to relieve stress.

Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?

Hook: So many of my professors have been so special to me. My MISY262 teacher, Ahmad Rabaa’i, has been such an impact on the student community and truly set a precedent on leading. I still enjoy catching up with him when I see him around campus! He is so helpful during class and has continued to bring me joy.

Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?

Hook: It means that there will always be a community to come back to. There have been so many people who come up to me when I wear UD merch and spark up a conversation with me. Everyone in the community wants to see each other succeed.

Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?

Hook: Get involved! This might seem to be overused advice but being involved with activities has led me to so many friendships. Also make sure to talk to people in your classes. You would be surprised how helpful these connections can be. It is nice to have somebody to study with and class friends have often led to outside of class friendships as well!

Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?

Hook: I am moving to Boston and working for Waters Corporation as a financial analyst.
