Students at the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics have a diverse range of nearly 30 student-led groups on campus, offering students opportunities to connect, engage and grow in their personal and professional interests.
Abbie Gresek, Class of 2026 finance and marketing double major, is the president of Women in Finance. Gresek shared why she joined the club, what makes this group unique and how to get involved.
Lerner: When and why did you choose to join this student group?
Gresek: I chose this group the spring semester of my freshman year. I had just switched my major and I wanted to build strong connections with talented females who had similar passions to me. I instantly felt uplifted and included, despite being new to finance! These women were always beside me throughout my journey as I navigated through new territory and discovered what I wished to do for my future career.
Lerner: When and where does your student group meet and approximately how many members do you have?
Gresek: Our student group has many events throughout the months that vary in location. We like to have guest speakers and various panels that give women the chance to learn from professionals in the field and equip themselves for the future. We have approximately 230 talented young women in our club!
Lerner: What is the mission/goal of your student group?
Gresek: The mission of the Women in Finance Club is to empower and nurture the growth of talented young women pursuing degrees in finance and related fields. Our goal is to establish a supportive community where women can thrive professionally, offering invaluable networking opportunities, insightful panels led by seasoned finance professionals, and mentorship from peers who share similar aspirations throughout their college journey.
Lerner: What is your best memory or proudest moment from this student group?
Gresek: My favorite memory from the Women in Finance group was the ability to be paired with a mentor through the CFA Society of Philadelphia. This mentorship was focused on Women’s Leadership in the Inve$t in Her Future Program! I would not have been exposed to this amazing opportunity if it were not for the Women in Finance group. I frequently meet with my mentor and he has given me invaluable guidance and advice. It is inspiring to have such a successful individual guiding and uplifting me throughout my journey. Also, the various networking events that the Women in Finance Club hosts. I have loved meeting such amazing women through these opportunities.
Lerner: What is unique about your student group?
Gresek: The Women in Finance group stands out for its dedication to fostering inclusivity in a traditionally male-dominated field. With the finance industry comprising around 75 percent men, our mission is clear: to cultivate an environment where women feel empowered to innovate, express creativity, and shatter barriers. Our aim is to inspire women to recognize their potential for excellence and fulfillment in their careers. Through the Women in Finance Club, we provide a diverse array of opportunities aimed at empowering women to excel and thrive.
Lerner: What are your goals for the future of your student group?
Gresek: Looking ahead, our aspiration is to foster ongoing growth within our group. The Women in Finance Club has experienced remarkable expansion in recent years, and we are committed to sustaining this positive trajectory. We firmly believe that increasing female participation not only opens up more opportunities but also enables us to connect with a larger pool of talented women. With each new member, our collective potential grows, propelling us towards even greater success and impact in the finance industry.
Lerner: How has your student group helped you grow, personally or professionally?
Gresek: Being part of this group has been instrumental in my personal and intellectual development, nurturing growth across various aspects of my life. Serving as secretary, I am humbled by the opportunity to hold an executive board position, recognizing the significant responsibility that comes with leading and mentoring a large group. Through this experience, I’ve honed my communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, preparing me for future challenges. Moreover, I’ve had the privilege to connect with numerous remarkable women who share my passions and aspirations, expanding my network in the finance field. Beyond professional connections, these women have become cherished friends, enriching my life in ways I am deeply grateful for.
