Lerner Co-op Program

The Lerner Co-op Program is an exclusive 9-12 month paid internship/co-op opportunity. Designed in partnership with the Delaware Workforce Development Board, the program bridges the gap between academic learning and practical work experience, while providing Delaware employers with access to talented Lerner business students.

Depending on their field of study, students will bring expertise in areas such as financial analysis, data-driven decision making, global business strategy, consumer behavior, brand management, customer experience, event planning, hospitality, professional selling and more.

The program:

  • Provides employers with talented interns for longer opportunities spanning 9-12 months.
  • Maximizes efficiency and ROI in recruiting ideal job candidates.
  • Strengthens partnerships between Lerner College and Delaware businesses.

Employer FAQ

How long is the internship?
The internship can span 9-12 months, from June 1 to May 31, structured as follows:
  • Summer and Winter (month of January) Sessions: up to 40 hours per week.
  • Fall and Spring Semesters: up to 20 hours per week.
What is the timeline for the hiring process?
Lerner Career Services will collaborate with employers and help facilitate the hiring process.

Typical co-ops run June 1 - May 31 and we strongly recommend starting the hiring process in early fall to stay competitive. Employers will work directly with the Program Coordinator.
What support will employers receive from Lerner College?
A dedicated staff member from Lerner Career Services will serve as the employer's liaison. They will assist with identifying industry needs, posting positions, scheduling interviews and the internship offer process.

The liaison will be employer's main point of contact for any questions, concerns or support throughout the program. Regular check-ins will be scheduled to discuss student progress and performance, and to make any needed adjustments.
Will students be taking classes while working?
Yes, students will be actively enrolled in courses, primarily during the Fall and Spring semesters. Students will require a degree of flexibility from employers regarding work hours to ensure they can balance both their academic responsibilities and professional commitments. Employers are encouraged to collaborate with students on scheduling.
Is there a recommended/required work schedule?
During the Summer and Winter terms, students are generally available to work standard office hours. During the Fall and Spring semesters, student availability varies due to class schedules. We recommend that supervisors collaborate with their interns or co-op students to create a flexible work schedule that accommodates their academic commitments.
What is the typical pay range for undergraduate interns?
Compensation for undergraduate interns generally ranges from $15 to $30 per hour, depending on the specific skills, experience level and responsibilities required for the role. Positions that demand specialized expertise or technical knowledge may offer higher wages, while roles that focus on foundational skill-building might start on the lower end of the spectrum. Wages will be determined by the employer.
How is student payment to be handled?
Employers will handle direct student payment and manage all onboarding logistics, including paperwork, systems access and any necessary training.
Is there an option to opt out of the program?
Both employers and students have the option to "opt-out" of the program if necessary. For students, this may involve withdrawing from the placement due to personal or academic reasons. For employers, if the arrangement is not working out, there is the flexibility to end the partnership early. In either case, the Lerner College liaison can assist with facilitating the process and ensuring a smooth transition.
Is the student responsible for transportation?
Yes, students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the workplace. In some cases, offering remote work or flexible hours could help accommodate transportation challenges.
Who owns the work created by the student during their employment?
Ownership of the student's work is between the organization and the student. The University of Delaware does not retain or have access to this information.
