A native of Newark, Delaware, Gabrielle Shannon graduated from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics as an accounting major.

Shannon was nominated for this series by Academic Program Coordinator Sarah Dix, who said, “Gaby is outstanding. Everyone in Accounting and MIS is going to miss her after she graduates. Her work ethic is to be admired and her work as a GA for our department has been exceptional all while maintaining a perfect GPA!”

In this profile, Shannon shared her favorite UD memories, how she has changed during her time at UD and her plans following graduation.

Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?

Shannon: Beginning my graduate career at UD after graduating from a larger university was definitely an adjustment. However, the people I met and the experience I was given made the transition easier. Something that changed me the most was my time working as a graduate assistant. Having the opportunity to see the other side of the academic world was an eye-opening experience. I gained invaluable skills and a deeper appreciation for the academic world as a whole. My time at UD has given me both technical and social skills that I will carry forward forever.

Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?

Shannon: One of the challenges that I faced during my college experience was figuring out how to manage my time. During the past year I was in classes working towards my master’s degree, working as a graduate assistant, and studying for the CPA exam. It took time to figure out a schedule that also allowed me to spend time with family and friends. What I have learned during this season of my life has definitely been worth the hard work that had to be done.

Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?

Shannon: After attending UD for only a year, every opportunity I have had to be on campus created happy memories that I will cherish forever.

Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?

Shannon: All the Lerner professors and staff that I have had the pleasure to engage with have had an incredible impact on my UD experience. I have made connections with wonderful people who offered me opportunities to learn and grow. I greatly appreciate everyone who supported me throughout my time at UD.

Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?

Shannon: To me, being a “Lifelong Lerner” means being a part of an incredible network and having a forever connection to the Lerner College. I have learned invaluable lessons and skills during my time at Lerner that I will continue to expand on and spread to those around me.

Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?

Shannon: I would tell incoming freshmen to get involved as much as possible. Building communities and making connections will not only enhance the college experience, but will continue to offer opportunities beyond collegiate years.

Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?

Shannon: Following graduation I will be working with PwC in Charlotte, N.C.!
