A native of Mullica Hill, N.J., Ty Williams is graduating from the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics as a sport management and finance double major.
Williams was nominated for this series by Academic Program Coordinator Cindy Walkusky who wished to highlight Ty for being a Lerner Ambassador, a member of the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, an active UDance participant, and for his high GPA.
In this profile, Williams shares his favorite UD memories, how he has changed during his time at UD and his plans following graduation.
Lerner: How do you think you have changed from your first semester at UD to now?
Williams: I think I’ve completely transformed over the span of my four years at UD. My extraversion and confidence have grown tremendously. I truly love meeting new people both personally and professionally and I attribute that to getting involved early and giving back to the organizations that have shaped my college experience – UDance & Alpha Kappa Psi. I looked to embody the spirit of “work hard, play hard” and I know I’ve done so throughout my time as a Blue Hen.
Lerner: What have been some of the challenges you have faced during your college experience and how did you overcome them?
Williams: I think the biggest challenge I faced as a Blue Hen was exploring what career path would best suit my skills and passions. As a double major, there are clear differences between strictly working in sports and working in finance. Although my path is far from complete, I can safely say I chose two amazing majors that are most in line with my long-term goals in the business world.
Lerner: What was your favorite signature UD experience and why?
Williams: My favorite UD experience was attending and executing UDance 2025. Over the course of the calendar year, the UD community fundraiser to help families and kids battling childhood cancer. On April 6, we celebrated our 12-hour dance marathon at the Bob Carpenter Center by raising $1.81 million for the kids. Nothing was more special than being there with the entire executive board and UD community that day.
Lerner: Did you have a Lerner professor or staff member that had a big impact on your UD experience?
Williams: Huge shoutout to Dr. Tim DeSchriver. His help and support both in and out of the classroom have never gone unnoticed. I think he does an incredible job supporting and allowing the sport management major to thrive alongside advisor Cindy Walkusky.
Lerner: What does being a “Lifelong Lerner” mean to you?
Williams: I think being a “Lifelong Lerner” means being a Swiss-army knife as a post-grad student from UD. Whether it’s joining the workforce or continuing your studies, the incredible students nominated for this honor are people who are well-rounded and able to contribute their mind and skillset in so many unique, diverse ways.
Lerner: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen to make the most out of their college experience?
Williams: Never stop expanding your horizons and never sell yourself short. Look to maximize your time as a Blue Hen because before you know it you’ll be in our shoes too.
Lerner: What are your plans following graduation?
Williams: I plan to work as a sales representative within the debt specialist servicing team at JG Wentworth.
