Enhance your financial education with a more thorough understanding of financial reports. This minor is a good choice for finance majors in particular because it offers a targeted education in financial statements and the reporting rules that govern them.

Financial analysts need a strong understanding of accounting standards and principles so they can:

  • Evaluate the financial health and value of businesses using historical financial statements
  • Help make decisions related to mergers and acquisitions
  • Understand how financial statements are created and how they interact with other reports
  • Use financial reporting data and adjust it to meet their needs
  • Navigate the SEC’s (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) website and read SEC filings

Program Requirements

The financial reporting minor requires 18 credits. The minor is open to all students except accounting majors. You will not be allowed to dual count more than six credits of required courses from your major department with this minor. You must complete the following classes with C- or better: ECON 101 and one of (MATH 221, MATH 232 or MATH 241).
